The brief. An engineering firm needed to explain a wastewater treatment plant in meetings with the local authority and at open days for local residents. The site is large, and the drawings made it hard to follow the water from inlet to outfall.

How we built it. We worked from the site layout in DWG and the 3D model of the equipment. The MDF base was CNC-milled with the site roads and changes in level. Clarifiers, reactors and tanks were built in foamed PVC and MDF, with the water in tinted acrylic. Pumps, valves and other small equipment were 3D printed in resin to keep their detail at 1:200, and the main pipework is brass tube painted to the plant's colour code for each fluid. Process buildings have lift-off roofs so visitors can see the equipment inside.

The result. A model you read in the direction the water flows, clear even to people who have never seen a treatment process. Because of its size, it splits into two modules that locate precisely and travel in a bespoke wooden crate.
