The brief. An architecture practice was entering a design competition for a mixed-use tower. The rules called for a white model at 1:500 on a fixed base size, to be delivered to the organiser's offices. The team sent us their Rhino model and the site plan with a week to go.

How we built it. We checked the file the same day and agreed two levels of abstraction with the practice: the tower, with every floor plate picked out by laser engraving, and the surrounding blocks as plain volumes so the scheme would stand out. The tower was cut floor by floor from foamed PVC and the neighbouring blocks from foam board. The MDF base was CNC-milled to show the street pattern and changes in level. Everything was assembled by hand and sprayed matt white, so no material reads differently from another.

The result. A clean, consistent model that reads from any side of the jury table. The tower locates on the base with dowels, so it travelled separately in its own bespoke packaging and dropped into place on arrival.
